Without doubt the most famous German aircraft of the Second World War, the fortunes of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 mirrored those of the Luftwaffe itself: its total dominance in the early victories was followed by a long struggle to retain superiority and, finally, by crushing defeat in the face of overwhelming numbers.
